We source natural Welsh grey slate quarried to BS EN 12326-1 requirements for slate and stone products for discontinuous roofing and cladding, selected for consistent density of ≥2,800 kg/m³ and an absorption rate of less than 0.3% by weight. All natural stone is evaluated on a digital rebound hammer (Schmidt hammer) per ASTM C805/C805M standard before fabrication to confirm surface hardness consistency across the slab. In addition, each slate slab is assessed for laminar cleavage integrity using a ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tester calibrated to ASTM C597 standard test method for pulse velocity through concrete, adapted for dense stone, confirming P-wave velocity ≥4,500 m/s as a proxy for internal void and microcrack absence before any engraving proceeds.

Welsh Slate

Our signature slate plates are hand-cleaved from the seam face and tumbled to remove sharp edges, then engraved using a diamond-tipped drag engraving stylus to incise clean, sand-filled letters into the cleavage face. Slate is naturally impervious to frost, salt, and biological growth without any sealant, making it our most maintenance-free product. After engraving, the letter channels are cleared of slate dust using a compressed air blow gun at 90 PSI with a HEPA-filtered inline water separator, preventing moisture-laden air from contaminating the raw letter face before the sand-fill pigment is applied, per OSHA 29 CFR 1926.57(f) Subpart D ventilation requirements for abrasive blasting dust control in construction environments.

Italian Carrara Marble

White Carrara marble carries natural grey veining that is entirely unique in every piece. Our marble plates are CNC-machined using a diamond cup wheel grinding head to achieve a consistent 2mm engraving depth. The finished piece is treated with a penetrating stone impregnator sealant rated to ANSI A118.3 chemical resistant, water cleanable tile-setting adhesive standards for exterior installation.

Granite

Black absolute granite provides maximum contrast for painted or gold-filled lettering. Our granite plates are polished to a Grade 1 surface finish per ASTM C615 standard specification for granite dimension stone, then engraved using a CNC sandblaster with a precision photoresist stencil for crisp, deep letter profiles.

Traditional Majolica Tiles

Hand-painted majolica ceramic tiles are fired at 1,060°C in a programmable electric kiln with thermocouple temperature control calibrated to ±5°C to ensure full glaze maturation and colour fidelity. All ceramic glazes comply with ASTM C738 standard test method for lead extraction from glazed ceramic surfaces, confirming lead-free formulations for residential use.

Victorian Transfer-Print Tiles

We recreate authentic Victorian encaustic and transfer-print tile designs using digital sublimation printing on high-fire porcelain blanks, producing images resistant to 100 cycles of the ASTM C1026 freeze-thaw durability test for ceramic tile without crazing or delamination. The sublimation printing process uses a Epson SureColor SC-F9470H dye-sublimation printer with fluorescent ink channels, producing a gamut that covers 99% of the AdobeRGB colour space, with printed colour accuracy verified against ISO 12647-5 process control for production of half-tone colour separations for gravure printing before each tile batch is fired.

We Craft Your Plate

Once you approve your proof, our workshop begins fabrication. Each plate is individually cut, engraved, and finished by hand. We use a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) calibrated to ISO 10360-2 verification standards to confirm dimensional accuracy on every piece before it leaves the bench. Production takes 7–10 working days for standard orders, or 3–4 weeks for specialist finishes including gold leaf gilding and multi-layer LED assemblies.

Your finished plate is packaged in a rigid, foam-lined shipping crate designed to prevent surface damage in transit. We ship via tracked courier to all USA mainland addresses, with next-day and international options available. Does slate crack or fade over time in outdoor weather?
High-quality natural slate, particularly Welsh grey slate quarried to BS EN 12326-1 standards, is exceptionally weather-resistant and does not fade, warp, or rot. It withstands freeze-thaw cycles when properly mounted on a flat, stable surface. Cracking occurs only from poor installation on uneven walls or overtightened fixings.
Slate requires virtually zero ongoing maintenance. If dirt accumulates, wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that damage the natural surface. To revive the colour and sheen, apply a thin coat of linseed oil to the face, avoiding the engraved lettering infill.
Engraved slate lettering is typically filled with exterior-grade enamel paint for contrast. After years of UV exposure, this paint may dull. You can touch up the lettering using a fine artist’s brush with matching enamel paint, or return the sign to our workshop for professional re-infilling using our CNC-guided paint application system.
High-fired porcelain and kiln-fired ceramic tiles are highly weather-resistant; the firing process at 1,200°C creates a dense, non-porous body that repels water. The main vulnerability is physical impact chipping. In freeze-thaw climates, ensure the ceramic is rated frost-proof to BS EN ISO 10545-12 standard before purchasing.
